Our History

Camp Alta first began as a summer camp in 1949
The grounds of Camp Alta first began as a summer camp in the early 1950's, when several parcels of land in the small town of Alta, California, were purchased from the Berkley Girl Scouts. The land was originally sponsored by an association of Southern Baptist Churches in the Sacramento area. In its early years, the camp's property provided a temporary home for faith-centered gatherings.

For over 65 years, Camp Alta has welcomed hundreds of thousands of guests, offering a space where people can encounter God’s presence through community, worship, and the beauty of creation. Over the decades, the camp has grown and evolved, adding new facilities and refining its programs while remaining committed to its founding mission of hospitality and spiritual renewal. Today, it stands as a peaceful sanctuary for churches, ministries, and groups seeking connection, rest, and inspiration in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Our Team

Matt Tomlinson

Director
Hello. My name is Matt Tomlinson and I am blessed to serve you in my role as Director. I have been around camps and camping ministry most of my life and continue to marvel at the power retreats have to deepen relationships and bring real connection.

Some highlights of my job, in no particular order include;
-meeting and hearing of new ministries and partners
-serving desserts
-seeing God move in the lives of those we serve
-leading a staff determined to love, serve and host you well

I look forward to meeting you and encourage you to reach out for availability or just to hear about what’s going on at Camp Alta.

Dena Saunders

Office Manager
Greetings from Camp Alta. My name is Dena Saunders and I serve as the Office Manager here at camp. My husband Scott and I moved to Alta more than 45 years ago. We love the area and calling this place home. In the early days, our church met on the camp grounds and we even lived here at camp for a short time. In 1995, I officially became part of the Camp Alta Family—and have never looked back. Camp Alta has seen us transition from newlyweds to grandparents—and every season has brought joy in serving the Lord! Spending time in this beautiful setting that is dedicated to the
glory of God is a gift!

Randall Chastain

Chef & Food Service Manager
Randall was hired as the camp’s food service manager in 2012. His wife Paige and two daughters Kiah and Etta have enjoyed making camp their home ever since. When Randall is not in the kitchen, he enjoys outside work, whether operating one of our tractors or helping Matt build something new. He is always up for a game of disc golf or talking about coffee. So, if you have some spare time, visit him in the kitchen and get to know him and his heart.

Robbie Weber

Operations Manager
Hey there! My name is Robbie Weber and I‘m the Operations Manager at Camp Alta. My story with Camp Alta started as a summer intern, where I not only fell in love with Camp Ministry but also met my now-wife. After that first summer, I’ve worn many hats gaining experience in all camp has to offer. From cooking in the kitchen, cleaning cabins, all the way to chopping down trees. In my new role I am working to make sure every aspect of your stay at Camp Alta goes smoothly!

If you are looking for me when you are at camp you will probably find me on the espresso bar, in the office, or chasing around my three boys

Our Beliefs

Camp Alta is a kingdom centric ministry seeking to share Christ’s love through the ministry of
hospitality. In this we recognize that the breadth and the depth of those we serve is deep
and wide. Our desire is to be agile and flexible while pursuing an ideal fit that enables us to
love you well.

We affirm the Holy Bible as the inspired Word of God and as the only basis for our beliefs.
We believe in one living and true God; an intelligent, spiritual and personal being who eternally exists in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We believe that Jesus Christ was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary and is true God and true man.
We believe that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, fully divine. He inspires the scriptures and illuminates human understanding of the truth. He convicts humans of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. He calls mankind to the Savior and effects regeneration.
We believe man is the special creation of God, made in His own image and is loved by Him. Through sinful inheritance and choice, man is alienated and separated from God and under God’s righteous judgment.
Salvation involves the redemption of the whole man and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior who, through His death and resurrection, obtained eternal redemption for the believer. Salvation includes regeneration, justification, sanctification and glorification and there is no salvation apart from personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord.
We believe that all who receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ are born of the Holy Spirit and thereby become children of God and members of the body of Christ, the one true church.
We believe the church is commissioned to evangelize the world by proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord and by living as His servants among men.
